Geophysics

The discipline of Geophysics at the University of Science and Technology of China (hereafter USTC Geophysics) was founded in 1958 by Mr. ZHAO Jiuzhang. A group of well-known scientists such as ZHAO Jiuzhang and FU Chengyi worked or taught here. USTC Geophysics currently have 65 academic staff, among whom 32 are full professors and 28 are winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Scholars. In 1998, USTC Geophysics was authorized to offer doctoral degree programs. In 2007, it was rated as the only key national first -level discipline of geophysics, listed in the First-class disciplines of the world, and rated A + in the fourth round of discipline evaluation in China.

USTC Geophysics has formed a well-structured and forward-looking disciplinary layout with three main research fields, namely, Solid Geophysics (including Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior, Geodynamics, Geophysical Exploration), Space Physics (including Physics of Ionosphere and Middle and Upper Atmosphere, Magnetosphere and Space Plasma Physics, Solar Terrestrial Physics) and Planetary Physics (including Planetary Space Environment and Physics of Planetary Interiors).

The discipline shows remarkable advantages and features in leading the frontier of science and technology, serving the needs of the country and cultivating high-end talents. Promoting the interdisciplinary development of planetary science by focusing on the frontier of science and technology, USTC Geophysics has one national-level research platform and two key CAS research platforms, which were all rated excellent in the national evaluation. The related achievements include the second prize of the National Natural Science Award, the first prize of natural science of Ministry of Education, and many first prizes at the provincial/ministerial level.

Based on the frontier of science and the needs of the country, USTC Geophysics aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with solid theoretical basis, innovation ability and leadership, so as to make them become elites and leaders in relevant industries. Many graduates have become outstanding talents in the field of geophysics at home and abroad, including 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 academicians of the National Academy of Engineering, U.S.A., dozens of distinguished scholars and several members of renowned international academies. All of them have played a vital role in the development of this field.

USTC Geophysics enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. The “Mengcheng National Geophysical Observatory” and “Key Laboratory of Geospace Environment”, were rated excellent in the latest five-year evaluation, ranking among the top 25% of the country and the top 15% of the Chinese Academy of Sciences respectively; a number of the faculty are serving as president / director of important domestic and international academies or councils, as well as chief editor or associate editor of important international journals such as JGR.

Excellent applicants may apply for USTC Fellowship, which covers tuition fee, insurance fee, monthly stipend (up to 7,000 RMB for PhD students and up to 3,000 RMB for master students) and accommodation subsidy. Applicants can apply through the Online Application System. Please refer to the following link for details: USTC Fellowship Program in USTC 2022:
