When I first became interested in study-abroad programmes, one of my biggest concerns was funding. After my first semester at the University of Texas at Austin, I had heard so many stories from my Korean professor about her students who had studied abroad.

Before attending college, going abroad had not been a goal for me. But as I studied a double major in Asian Studies and Asian Cultures and Languages, with a focus on Korea, I knew that studying abroad would help me become more immersed in my studies.

What is the Fulbright Foreign Student Programme?

The Fulbright Program is one of the main academic exchange programmes for graduate students sponsored by the US government. It has been been creating links between the US and other countries since it was established in 1946.

Approximately 8,000 graduate students, teachers and academic professionals are accepted into the programme each year, usually then referred to as “Fulbrighters”. Students are selected based on merit and academic performance.

Degrees in America are expensive, but an abundance of scholarships are available to help international students out.

Almost all universities have scholarship programmes, most of which are open to applications from international students – although you may need to take SAT or ACT tests. According to the Fulbright Commission, more than 600 American universities offer scholarships worth $20,000 or more to international students. They are typically assessed on either academic merit, financial need, or extracurricular contribution.

Attending university in the United States is a dream for many students around the globe. But paying for university education in America is another story entirely. American universities do not follow any standardised government fee system, meaning that tuition costs vary drastically across the US.

Tuition fees in the US for public universities can range from $5,000 to $50,000 (£4,470 to  £44,700) per year. Most undergraduate degrees last four years.

Wisconsin is situated in the US Midwest. It borders Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Michigan, as well as two Great Lakes.

The state is home to a number of thriving industries, from manufacturing to entertainment, as well as a good balance of city and country and a number of respected universities. Given that living costs in Wisconsin are slightly lower than those in other US states, it’s a good choice for students.

A variety of outdoor activities are on offer in this area, including fishing, skiing, hiking and water sports.

Healthcare in the United States is very different from systems in other countries as there is no national or universal healthcare system that international students can access.

Anyone who needs health insurance in the US must choose from individual private care providers and the plans they have on offer. International students will need to research health insurance options before they begin their studies in the US so that they are covered as soon as they arrive.
