International students might not have received much teaching in English before coming to university, leaving them less confident in their academic writing ability. Even if their writing is skilled, the common misconception that native English language users are more proficient than foreign language users can easily exacerbate self-doubt.

While I was still at school, I came across an advertisement for Finnish upper secondary school chemistry competitions. I decided to participate, and I performed quite well.  

Due to my success in the competition, I received an invitation to Finland’s Chemistry Olympiad training, where Finnish upper secondary school students were prepared for the International Chemistry Olympiad.  

The Canadian government has announced that it will set a cap on international student permit applications for the next two years. 

The cap will mean that approximately 360,000 study permits will be approved in 2024, which is a 35 per cent decrease from the number approved in 2023. 

Caps for each province have been calculated according to population size, meaning provinces that have experienced the lowest increase in international students will see the largest decrease in study permits accepted in 2024.

I’m currently studying a postgraduate degree in humanities at the University of Manchester in the UK. Before that, I was an undergraduate student at Western University in Canada. I ended up doing five years of undergraduate studies because I decided to do a six-month exchange at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland during my fourth year.
