I am an Irish-American dual citizen who was raised in Bend, Oregon, in the US. When I graduated from high school, I yearned for adventure and knew I wanted to leave my state. I ended up going to Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, where I earned a bachelor of arts in economics and a minor in philosophy.

In my junior year I studied abroad in Madrid, Spain, and fell in love with the culture and language.

If you’re applying to an English-speaking university as a non-native speaker, it’s highly likely you’ll have to take an English language proficiency test. The most commonly accepted tests include the IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo English Test (DET).

These tests help to show your chosen institution that you have a sufficient grasp of English to excel in an academic setting. Often, they’ll also be needed as part of your separate student visa application once you receive your university offer to study abroad.

My name is Christine Mittler and I am a PhD student in aerospace engineering at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane. I moved to Australia around five years ago and I am originally from Germany.

In December 2017, I arrived in Melbourne with a working holiday visa and a plan to stay for half a year in Australia before returning to Munich. There is a saying in German that I have heard a few times in Bavaria: “Erstens kommt es anders und zweitens als man denkt”. It translates roughly as “things turn out differently to how you think”.
