Now that the average student rent is £566 a month and the average maintenance loan from the government comes in at £602 a month, students are left with just £36 of their maintenance loan to cover the rest of their living costs. 

According to findings from the National Student Accommodation Survey, carried out by Save the Student, 44 per cent of students are struggling to keep up with high rents as the maintenance loan is just not enough to cover them.

Current students are twice as likely to have looked at academic rankings during the process of selecting a university compared with those who were students 25 years ago, research from the Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE) has found. 

A survey carried out in December 2017 collected responses from 502 current students and 500 adults who had attended university about 25 years ago to track changes in requirements over time.

UK students are potentially missing out on more than £150 million worth of scholarships, according to research by The Scholarship Hub

The Scholarship Hub, a free online database of more than 3,000 scholarships and bursaries for students, surveyed 20 leading organisations that offer additional funding to UK students.

Respondents such as the Royal Television Society, the Miranda Brawn Diversity Leadership Foundation and the Milford Haven Port Authority said that they often struggled to find enough suitable candidates.

Girls are still failing to show as much interest as boys are in studying sciences at university, despite the surge in popularity of STEM subjects at A level, according to a study of more than 100,000 sixth-formers.

Computer science, mechanical engineering, maths, medicine and physics are all in the top 10 preferences of degree programmes for boys but only maths and medicine made it into the top 10 for female students, according to research conducted by Unifrog, a platform to help students pick courses and universities.

Two Italian universities have been crowned the cheapest universities in Europe, according to new analysis by foreign exchange company FairFX. 

Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and Scuola Superiore Sant’ Anna have been named the cheapest for both EU and non-EU students because there are no tuition fees and the university covers living costs for all students.

Durham University is the top university for on-campus wi-fi, according to data compiled by StudentCrowd. 

The online review community asked students to rate their universities on a number of criteria including campus facilities, students’ unions and wi-fi. 

The data were based on 7,348 student reviews, giving Durham an average score of 4.5 out of five for wi-fi.

Thirty University of Sunderland students are to take part in a scheme that supports vulnerable people in police custody. 

This scheme is working in partnership with Dame Vera Baird QC, a British politician, barrister and academic. 

It aims to address the shortage of “appropriate adults” in the region and the students are being trained under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) to provide a 24-hour volunteer service across the Northumbria area.
