I am a diplomat and public service officer from Thailand and I’m currently pursuing a master of engaging Asia at the Australian National University (ANU).  

I’m grateful to have received the Australian government scholarship in 2022, also known as the Australia Awards, which has given me incredible opportunities to further my studies.

As a high school student, I always thought of living abroad as a step towards happiness. It might have been my belief that freedom would solve my problems, but that wasn’t true.

As high school students, most of us have no idea how different university life can be. We imagine an idealistic future. Yes, you will meet new friends, explore cities you have yet to visit and get to try things you are not familiar with. However, there are limitations that it’s important to be aware of.

I’m originally from Portugal, but I grew up in a few different countries. Between the ages of 10 and 16, I lived in Angola because of my mother’s work.

When it came to further education, I wanted to move abroad again in order to feel challenged, meet new people and explore a new city, so I did my A levels in Brighton. I stayed there for university, pursuing my bachelor’s in biomedical science at the University of Sussex.

This time last year, I received an email from the HEC Paris admissions team confirming my admission and scholarship. I was super excited and happy but confused and lost at the same time. It had only been two days since I had settled in Germany after spending months in a refugee camp, uncertain of what the future held when I left my home country after the Taliban took over. 

I had to decide whether to stay in Germany and build a new home or move to France to pursue a master’s degree.

My name is Paula Vivas. I’m a second-year joint honours BA history and politics and international relations student at Royal Holloway, University of London. As a student ambassador at Royal Holloway, I meet many prospective students who are eagerly awaiting their A-level results but are often terrified about not getting into university. I always remind them that there’s often another chance – through clearing. It’s great to be able to write about my experience with clearing because it means a lot to me.
