Entrepreneurship is becoming one of the most important skills that students can acquire.
In a suite of rankings put together by French consultancy Emerging and published exclusively by Times Higher Education, students can explore which universities have a good reputation in providing a digital education and encouraging tech skills and entrepreneurship.
The table was put together through the screening of 75,000 CVs of executives at the world’s leading digital companies, as ranked by Crunchbase. This analysis was combined with a live survey led by Trendence from a global panel of 3,500 selected digital professionals, corporate IT executives, start-up executives, and young digital professionals worldwide. The top five universities are based in the UK and the US, while the highest ranking university outside these two countries is Technical University of Munich in Germany.
While the UK and the US are the most represented countries, universities in Germany, Canada and Australia with 10 universities each and India with nine universities represented.
Top three universities for digital entrepreneurship
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is an independent, private university located in Massachusetts, United States.
It has a strong reputation for teaching and learning in science and technology courses. As well as undergraduate and postgraduate courses, MIT offers a range of executive courses in digital business strategy, AI and business analytics.
There is also a range of student societies that encourage entrepreneurship and digital skills, among them the entrepreneur club, the FinTech club and the technology club.
2. Harvard University
Harvard University is an Ivy League institution located in Massachusetts, United States. Despite being one of the oldest universities in the US, Harvard encourages entrepreneurship both in and out of the classroom.
Societies such as the entrepreneurship club, the blockchain and crypto club and the business ideas for generational shifts club encourage students to think about entrepreneurship and digital skills beyond their studies.
The Rock Centre for Entrepreneurship encourages students to develop their ideas with a range of competitions, mentoring sessions and fellowships.
3. Stanford University
Stanford University’s proximity to Silicon Valley means that students have opportunities to conduct work placements and projects at a number of tech and digital companies.
Entrepreneurship is encouraged at the university, with a number of student clubs such as the big ideas club, the entrepreneur club, the tech club and the sustainable business club.
As well as undergraduate and postgraduate courses in business, computer science and management, Stanford University offers a range of short courses in entrepreneurship and business modelling.
