Choosing to study engineering is a smart choice for long-term earning potential, according to a new ranking of degree majors in the United States.

All but one of the top 10 degrees ranked by mid-career salary are in an engineering discipline, with petroleum engineering coming out on top thanks to a median salary of $172,000 10 years after graduation.

Actuarial science is the only degree outside engineering where at least half of graduates will earn more than $115,000 after 10 years.

Facebook and Google hire more than 80 per cent of their employees from the top 200 schools in the US, according to a new report.

In fact, more than half of Facebook employees graduated from a top 10 college, taken from a sample of public LinkedIn profiles.

In comparison, just under 50 per cent of Amazon employees were hired from colleges outside the top 100 of Forbes’ list of the top schools in the US. Less than 10 per cent of its employees are from a top 10 college.

It might seem like all the deadlines to apply to a top university in the United States are clustered at the beginning of February, but fortunately, it’s not too late to get in an application.

Many leading colleges you may not have heard of continue to accept applications on a rolling basis, and others set their deadlines between March and September 2016.

International students in the United States tend to concentrate in three states: New York, California and Texas.

So the results of the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors 2015 report, revealing the 25 US universities with the most international students, are not particularly surprising.

New York, California and Texas each claim three universities in the top 25, as does Pennsylvania.

The economic value added to students’ lives by attending specific US colleges has been calculated for a non-profit organisation’s university ranking system.

Educate to Career (ETC), a non-profit that provides data resources relating to education and career outcomes, used a variety of metrics to measure the improvement in earnings and employability of graduates against the total cost of their education.

Choosing a college in the US, with myriad subjects, funding schemes and course costs, has always been a minefield for prospective students and their parents. Now President Obama’s administration has released a new College Scorecard, saying teenagers will have “reliable data on every institution of higher education”, although his long-mooted plans for a college rating system have now been scrapped.
