In-depth knowledge is the most important quality of a university teacher, according to research into student perspectives on teaching quality.

For one in five students, the qualifications of university lecturers would affect their decision about where to study.

The research, by The Student Room, indicates what students value about teaching quality ahead of the UK government’s plans for a teaching excellence framework, which will use student opinions to create metrics on which to evaluate university teaching.

Students are getting serious about climate change issues and have added their voices to an open letter delivered last night to a French diplomat ahead of the United Nations climate change conference.

The letter, signed by major higher education and student networks, urges ministers, negotiators and governments to support research and education that will play a role in finding climate change solutions.

It was handed to Pierre-Henri Guignard – the general secretary for the UN’s COP21 conference, which will take place in Paris in December.

Hundreds of graduate opportunities are available across the UK in financial services, retail, manufacturing and the public sector, according to research released today.

A list of the top employers, compiled by The Complete University Guide, confirms that financial services firms including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, KPMG and Ernst & Young hire the most graduates in the UK.

The best universities in Australia and New Zealand all fall within the top 250 universities in the world, according to the THE World University Rankings 2015-16.

Australia dominates the list of the region’s 11 best universities, with eight universities all ranked among the best 150 in the world, and one university in the top 250.

In October and November 2015, Times Higher Education will announce its series of university rankings for different subjects.

The six subject rankings supplement the 2015-16 World University Rankings, released at the end of September.

Although the methodology is the same, these rankings offer an alternative way to evaluate universities, based on which subject students hope to study.

Not one US university in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16 has more than 35 per cent international students, contrasting with institutions in Asia, Oceania and Europe.

An analysis of universities in the rankings shows that 16 of the 30 universities with the highest percentage of international students are in the UK, seven are elsewhere in Europe and four are in Australia or New Zealand.

This may well come as a surprise, since the US has long been a popular destination for teenagers looking to study abroad.

The best universities in the UK are going head-to-head with rivals in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-16.

Many UK institutions in the top 100 are ranked just one or two positions away from those in mainland Europe that offer study opportunities at a fraction of the cost.
