The Canadian government has announced that it will set a cap on international student permit applications for the next two years. 

The cap will mean that approximately 360,000 study permits will be approved in 2024, which is a 35 per cent decrease from the number approved in 2023. 

Caps for each province have been calculated according to population size, meaning provinces that have experienced the lowest increase in international students will see the largest decrease in study permits accepted in 2024. 

From Monday 1st January 2024, international students studying in the UK will no longer be able to bring dependants with them on their UK student visa, aside from those on research postgraduate programmes. 

The announcement was made in May 2023, in a written statement by home secretary Suella Braverman, stated that the government is “removing the right for international students to bring dependants unless they are on postgraduate courses currently designated as research programmes”.

The Australian government has laid out a range of changes to student visas in a bid to crack down on visa applications from non-genuine students and ensure students and graduates are working in jobs that match their skills levels. 

Among these measures are the decision to cut the post-study work visa for international students by two years, just months after it announced extensions to post-study work rights.

The 2023 Global Student Satisfaction Awards, conducted by Studyportals, Unibuddy and the British Council IELTS, asked international students from almost every nation to rate their study experience in 126 countries.

The UK government has announced a £118 million skills package to boost training and development of AI research and expertise in the country.
