The pandemic has changed many things for universities and students but a few things haven’t changed. The University of Toronto and Canadian universities in general have continued to welcome newcomers, even those they cannot welcome in person until Covid-19 is behind us. Indeed, with its reputation as one of the world’s safest countries, Canada has long been a top destination for students worldwide.

With Covid-19 making in-person campus visits a challenge, many prospective students are missing out on a crucial factor in choosing a university this year: the gut feeling you have when you visit.

Thanks to rankings, course listings, university websites and webinars, it’s easier than ever to research universities online, but it can be hard to replicate visiting in person.

Use these tips to help you get a feel for a campus, even from thousands of miles away.

Every university in English-speaking countries will have some form of English language requirement to enrol. This is to ensure that students are as prepared as they can be for success in an academic environment. While the , their English language requirements are quite similar to other universities in the US and UK. However, their overall admissions processes can be more rigorous.

This year’s university admissions process is unlike any seen before. Gone are the open days and interviews, and in are videos and Zoom and Skype calls.

Online interviews are not new per se; overseas applicants have always had the opportunity to conduct their interviews virtually to avoid travelling. The change of format will not impact what the university is looking for: candidates who display a passion for their subject, enthusiasm and evidence of independent learning.

The clock is ticking and just two weeks remain before the 15 October deadline on applications to study at Oxbridge or for a medical degree. Perhaps you have left it late through indecisiveness or because of extraneous circumstances.
