Deakin University's School of Exercise and Nutritional Science has taken the first place position for the second year running in ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments 2017.
This subject ranking from the consultancy was published for the first time in 2016, highlighting the performance of about 300 universities with sport-related units and sport science universities.
Two sport-related departments from UK universities feature in the top 10: Liverpool John Moores University. The only US university sport-related department to enter the top 10 is the University of South Carolina.
European universities dominate the list with 122 European institutions in the total ranking. The UK is well represented with 39 units followed by Spain with 13 units and Germany with nine.
The US has the strongest presence in the ranking with 78 units in the top 300. Canada also performed well with 25 institutions present, and 15 units from Brazil are listed in the ranking.
Two institutions are from Africa: University of Cape Town’s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is ranked 46th and Université de la Manouba’s Higher Institute of Sports and Physical Education is ranked 151-200.
Some 51 institutions are from Asia and Oceania and about 90 per cent of these institutions are from Australia, China, Japan and New Zealand.
The ranking is based on a number of indicators including citations and the number of internationally collaborated publications.
