The annual Huawei University Challenge is back. This four-week online hackathon invites undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students to solve rigorous data-related challenges. From 1 to 26 November, get ready to compete, innovate and interact with other top-tier students for a shot at the £15,000 prize pool.
Since 2017, Huawei has encouraged students to solve real-world problems through the University Challenge. From image deblurring to high-performance computing, the scope of the themes encourages students to learn about advanced technologies. The tasks are carefully developed by Huawei’s experts to spark creativity and students’ research interests.

The theme of this year’s challenge is indoor positioning. An indoor positioning system uses geospatial data to estimate the location of a user or device in challenging scenarios. Many technologies such as guided navigation, virtual or augmented reality, location sharing, business intelligence, security services and other technologies make use of such a system to provide location contextual information.
Indoor positioning systems not only show the location to the user, but they also improve the experience of many other applications, boosting location context data availability and building the foundation for many scientific, technical and industrial applications.
In teams of two or three, participants will tackle two tasks related to indoor positioning. First, the team has two weeks to take on a geospatial data estimation challenge with access to labelled data set. They need to analyse data and train models to predict the distance between two data points.
To advance to the next challenge, participants must earn a minimum score on the leader board. Shortlisted participants will take on the second task, which is a data classification challenge. Teams will create clusters of data points to represent physical areas from unlabelled data. Only the top six teams will be invited to the final and have the chance to present their solution in front of Huawei’s jury panel.
