Student visas in the Netherlands

Many students choose to study in the Netherlands for the high-quality education, programmes taught in English and the more affordable student lifestyle.

But finding all the information on student visas can be tricky. To help you through this process, we have put together a handy table that covers all aspects of a Netherlands student visa.

What type of visa is required?	To study in the Netherlands you will need a student residence permit. If you are from the EU, EEA or Switzerland and you want to study in the Netherlands for longer than three months, you will only have to register with local Dutch authorities and do not need to apply for a visa.
How much does a visa application cost?	€ 210 (£185) (paid through your education institution)
What are the language requirements?	Language requirements can vary depending on your university or programme, but typically you are required to read textbooks, understand lectures, take part in classroom discussions and produce written work in English. You might also be asked to prove your language proficiency by supplying proof of past education in English or you need a 6.0 or higher on the IELTS, depending on what your university requires.
How much money do I need to prove I can support myself?	Students must prove they can support themselves financially with a minimum of €870 per month.
Are there any other charges?	Applicants might also have to pay fees for health insurance, travel insurance and a tuberculosis test within three months of arrival.
Can I work while studying?	Students can work up to 16 hours a week when their course is in session, and unlimited hours outside term time. You will need a work permit or internship agreement from your employer.
What are the post-study work options?	The post-study work visa (orientation year) in the Netherlands allows you to stay in the country for one year after you complete your degree. It cannot be extended unless you pursue another course or further education. This visa costs €210.
When should I apply for my student visa?	You must send your application within five days of arriving in the Netherlands. However, it can take up to 90 days for the application to be processed, which is the full allowance of time in the country without a visa. So do consider applying at least a month before you arrive to give yourself more time.
