McMaster’s Music program provides a thorough grounding in theory, general musicianship, history, and performance, and allows students to focus on specific areas of interest, such as music education, history or theory. Our unique Music Cognition program allows music students to study how music is perceived in the brain and how it intersects with other aspects of intellectual development. Your study of Music at McMaster begins in your first year.

Students both study and create multimedia works that use audio, video, animation, and text in an informative and artistically interesting fashion. McMaster’s Justice, Political Philosophy and Law program fosters a sophisticated understanding of the law and legal institutions, and of the political and moral theories that address the value and justice of these institutions. As a JPPL major, you’ll study a wide range of topics including law, policy, global politics, moral theory, feminist jurisprudence, human rights, and globalization. Your major in JPPL will begin in your second year following a successful application to the program.

Our iArts (Integrated Arts) program invites you to direct your path wherever your creativity takes you – from acting, to painting, to writing, to sculpting objects, devising plays, crafting essays, etching prints, researching cultural histories, creating digital videos, staging immersive installations and more. In iArts, you’ll have the freedom to learn in, across and between many disciplines. You’ll begin your iArts degree in your first year.

The historian’s obligation is to sharpen our awareness of the mechanics of change and, so far as possible, to explain it. As a History major, you’ll study a broad range of courses, and be introduced to the important interactions between great nation-states, as well as to significant social themes, stretching across class, race, and gender. Your major in History will begin in your second year, following an exploratory general first-year program called Humanities I.

The Global Peace and Social Justice program seeks to understand the reasons for confrontation and violence on all levels and, by understanding, to find ways to transform or prevent destructive conflicts. The program covers a wide range of fields including philosophy, religion, politics, anthropology, the sciences, and many others. Your major in Global Peace and Social Justice will begin in your second year, following an exploratory general first-year program called Humanities I.

From Old English manuscripts to modern examples of popular culture, studying English and Cultural Studies will introduce you to a centuries-old cultural storehouse. You’ll also examine texts from a variety of national literatures, as well as explore cultural studies, one of the fastest-growing areas of intellectual inquiry in the Humanities. Your major in English and Cultural Studies will begin in your second year, following an exploratory general first-year program called Humanities I.
