Materials Science and Engineering

The discipline of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was established by a group of prestigious scientists such as Yang Chengzong, Ge Tingsui and Shi Changxu in the 1950s. Since then, the MSE discipline has been implementing the policy of ""getting the whole Academy involved in its education and combining research institutes with departments and schools of the university"".

In 2013, under the guidance of the “Pioneer Initiative”, CAS integrated the postgraduate education of several institutes, including IMR (Institute of Metal Research), into USTC, and the resources of National Key Labs and Key Facilities of the Institutes can be used to support the research, discipline development and talent training in USTC. In this way deeper integration of science and education between institutes and USTC has been promoted. In 2015, with the approval of CAS, the School of Materials Science and Engineering of USTC was established, creating a complete undergraduate-master-doctoral-postdoctoral talent training system.

There are 536 researchers in the MSE discipline. It has a strong team of researchers and experts with great impact on the international academia and engineering industry. MSE discipline of USTC was rated as category ""A"" in the fourth national discipline assessment and selected in the national project of ""World-class Disciplines Construction"". In 2020, it was ranked 10th among global universities and 3rd in China according to the US News Materials Science rankings.

The major secondary disciplines include: Materials Physics and Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Processing Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering. The reputational research directions of MSE discipline include: Metal Structural Materials, Energy Materials, Metal Corrosion and Protection, Material Processing, Computational Materials, and the Safety Evaluation of Nuclear Power Materials, etc.

Among them, the directions of “Metal Structural Materials” and “Metal Corrosion and Protection” capture a lead in the world, and the “Energy Materials” direction is in the forefront in the world.

We cultivate leaders engaged in basic and applied research in frontier and interdisciplinary fields. Six Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering among the graduates have made outstanding contributions to China.

Excellent applicants may apply for USTC Fellowship, which covers tuition fee, insurance fee, monthly stipend (up to 7,000 RMB for PhD students and up to 3,000 RMB for master students) and accommodation subsidy. Applicants can apply through the Online Application System. Please refer to the following link for details: USTC Fellowship Program in USTC 2022:
