In 1958, the Department of Nuclear Science and Technology, formerly known as the Department of Nuclear Physics and Engineering, was established to cultivate talents for ""Two Bombs and One Star"". In 1970, USTC moved south to Hefei. Adhering to the spirit of ""Two Bombs, One Star"", in 1991, USTC established China's first national laboratory, the National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, which was awarded the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress. In 2007, it was rated as a national key discipline. In 2008, School of Nuclear Science and Technology was established by integrating with State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics, and Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In 2019, Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Technology was selected as one of the first national first-class undergraduate programs. This discipline is the only one of the same disciplines in China with two national large science installations, supporting Hefei as the first large science center of CAS in 2014, and the second comprehensive national science center in 2017. In 2017, the pre-research project of Hefei Advanced Light Source, the fourth-generation synchrotron radiation source, was launched. In 2019, the comprehensive research facility construction of fusion reactor host key system was launched to build an international magnetic confinement fusion research platform with the strongest performance and the most comprehensive functions.
This discipline was awarded A+ in the fourth round of discipline assessment in 2016. It covers five secondary disciplines: nuclear energy science and engineering, nuclear technology and application, radiation protection and environmental protection, nuclear fuel cycle and materials, synchrotron radiation and application, and has unique advantages in the construction and research of fusion engineering, synchrotron radiation and other major scientific projects. There are now 135 professors, 120 doctoral supervisors, including 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 36 other talents. Also some well-known experts at home and abroad are invited as part-time faculty, carrying out distinctive teaching and research cooperation.
The core goal of this discipline is to cultivate interdisciplinary talents for the ""great Power"", directly serving the construction of national scientific installations and frontier research of nuclear science and technology. In the past five years, 396 doctors and 236 masters have graduated. There are 290 doctoral students, 200 master's students and 64 undergraduates of year 2020. Among them, 17 won the ""Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award"" or ""Dean's Award"" of CAS, and 47 won the National Scholarship for Graduate students. It has cooperated with dozens of world-renowned institutions such as Princeton University and Cambridge University in joint education for 40 doctoral students, and sponsored 271 students to attend important international conferences.
This discipline has strong scientific research strength and is a leader in the basic research of nuclear science in China. Since 2016, more than 1500 high-level papers (more than 100 highly-cited papers) have been published, which plays a leading role among domestic universities in the same discipline. 357 invention patents are authorized. Research achievements include the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress award, second Prize of National Natural Science Award, First Prize of Military Science and Technology Progress Award, Ho Liang Ho Li Award, National Innovation Prize, Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences and many other awards. With a strong international influence, it has long-term close cooperation with international counterparts. From 2016 to 2019, more than 5,000 foreign scientists visited China to participate in disciplinary cooperation every year on average. Its academic level is close to that of the first-class disciplines in the world, and it ranks at the forefront of the world in the fields of magnetic confinement fusion, design, construction and operation of large scientific devices, combustion mass spectrometry, and synchrotron radiation in-situ research.
Excellent applicants may apply for USTC Fellowship, which covers tuition fee, insurance fee, monthly stipend (up to 7,000 RMB for PhD students and up to 3,000 RMB for master students) and accommodation subsidy.
