Information and Communication Engineering

The disciplines of Information and Communication Engineering of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) began with radio technology and other majors when USTC was founded in 1958. After more than 60 years of development, it has developed into a multi-disciplinary discipline featuring multimedia intelligent computing, speech and language information processing, wireless network communication and information security. Now there are two secondary disciplines: Communication and Information System (state key discipline) and Signal and Information Processing (Anhui Provincial key discipline).

The discipline has a strong faculty and an outstanding academic reputation. There are 84 faculty members, nearly 70% of whom have overseas experience. There are one editor-in-chief and 17 editorial board members of IEEE journal. Now there are four national research platforms: national Engineering Laboratory for Brain-like Intelligence Technology and Application, National Engineering Laboratory for Speech and Language Information Processing, Information and Computer Experimental Teaching Center, and State Key Laboratory of Cognitive Intelligence. It has 7 provincial and ministerial platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Wireless Optoelectronic Communication of CAS, the Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Space Information of CAS, and the Key Laboratory of Space Information Processing and Application System Technology of CAS.

This discipline leads the world in multimedia intelligent computing and speech and language information processing. There have been the world's leading innovation results in the video compression and transmission, image analysis and retrieval direction. They possess the most patent technologies in H.265 international standard in China. The breakthrough in the development of DLVC video coding system, with its compression efficiency three times of H.264, has been widely applied to the core products of leading enterprises such as Huawei and Hikvision, and won the Second Prize of National Technical Invention award (2019). The important innovations and breakthroughs in speech enhancement, speech synthesis and recognition, human-machine natural speech dialogue and other aspects have repeatedly won the champions in international speech synthesis and recognition technology evaluation. Other awards include the Best Paper Award of IEEE Signal Processing Society (2018) and the first Prize of Science and Technology Progress of Anhui Province (2018).

This discipline is one of the main promoters of wireless communication research and development in China. It has taken the lead in information security research in China and has won the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress of the Ministry of Education (2018). In the field of information hiding, polarization steganography codes and non-additive steganography codes approaching the theoretical domain have been proposed, which solves the non-additive steganography problem, the first among 23 open problems in this field, and a reversible hidden coding method is proposed to reach the theoretical domain.

The discipline adheres to the educational philosophy of elite education, follows the educational characteristics of broad foundation, specialization and innovation, and cultivates interdisciplinary talents with innovative spirit, practical ability, devotion to country and international vision. There are five academicians (Lin Zunqi, Guo guangcan guo, Dong Chunpeng, Wu Weiren, and Lu Jun), 33 IEEE fellows (Zhang Yaqin, Long Teng, Tao Dacheng, etc.), and a large number of outstanding talents, who are active in the national defense security, key universities and first-class enterprises, devoting themselves to the basic research, major projects, and industrial innovation.
