In 1958, the discipline of Biophysics was established in USTC to train cutting-edge talents for the two bombs and one satellite. It was approved of as a national First-level key discipline of biology in 2007, and was selected as a national ""Double First-class"" Initiative in 2017. The school now has 164 full-time teachers, of whom 80% are national high-level talents. It owns one Second prize of National Teaching Achievements, four second prizes of National Natural Science, one second prize of Scientific and technological Progress, and one second prize of scientific and technological invention. Currently, there are 754 doctoral students and 552 master students.

The discipline focuses on microbiology and interdisciplinary biology, including biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, neurobiology and biophysics, immunobiology, synthetic biology and bioinformatics, etc. In addition to P3 Laboratory, there are five national platforms, including Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure for Steady-State High Magnetic Field, National Engineering Laboratory for Brain-like Intelligent Technology and Application, and National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory. It has 10 key laboratories of Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Anhui Province, including Comprehensive National Science Center for Great Health Research Institute, and Key Laboratory of Membraneless Organelles and Cytodynamics of the Ministry of Education.

In the past five years, 1860 papers have been published, with an average impact factor of 6.05. First authors of six journal papers of CNS are from the school, 52 papers of subsidiary journals, and two achievements have been selected as one of the Top Ten National Advances in life sciences. The amount of scientific and technological achievements transformation contract was more than 300 million yuan, and two projects were selected as the highlights of scientific and technological achievements transfer and transformation of CAS.

This discipline focuses on four aspects to cultivate leading talents in life sciences with solid foundation in mathematics and physics and outstanding professional ability. Since its establishment, six from graduates have been elected academicians of CAS and three academicians of American Academy of Sciences and Canadian Academy of Sciences and Engineering. More than 140 professors are working in high-level universities in Europe and the United States. Since 2007, students have participated in iGEM competitions and won 16 gold medals, 5 silver medals, 2 bronze medals and 3 individual awards, ranking the first among universities in China.

In the past five years, 84 people from this discipline have taken important academic positions in international and national professional societies, including council members of International Magnetic Resonance Society, Executive Committee member of International Union of Immunology, and President of Chinese Society of Immunology, the chief editor of CMI, one of the 21 leading journals in China. 49 people have served as the associate editor or editorial board of Cell Res and Hepatology. In 2020, this discipline was ranked 52nd globally and 3rd domestically by the Times of Education. Its QS ranks 51-100 in the world and ranks third in China.

Entry requirements
  • Applicants for master's programs must have bachelor's degree (equivalent to bachelor's degree in China). 
  • Applicants for master's programs should be under the age of 40.
  • Applicants for programs instructed in Chinese should have passed new HSK Level 4 or above; applicants whose native language is Chinese, or can provide proof of studying at a high school / university where the teaching language is Chinese, can apply for HSK test exemption. Applicants for programs instructed in English need to provide proof of English language proficiency.
