Programme
In BSc Data Science and Society, you will study data in a variety of subjects from different perspectives:
From statistical perspective
• Programming (Python)
• Data visualization
• Statistics
• Machine Learning/AI
• Use of Big Data
From sociological perspective
• Science and Technology Studies
• Ethical use of tech
• How to gain knowledge with/through data
From governance perspective
• Legal data regulations
• Human Rights in the Digital Age
• Legitimization of use of biometric data
During the first part of the programme, you are introduced to the main topics of the programme. You will learn about data science, society, science and technology studies, governance, and philosophy. Also, you will become familiar with the technical skills that you will need in data science, such as programming and data visualization. After completing the core curriculum, you will choose in which specialization you will proceed: Cognitive Technology or Regulation, Governance and Innovation.
Entry requirements
• Dutch VWO diploma or equivalent
• Additional requirements: Maths (A, B, or international equivalent)
• English proficiency
After graduation, you can enter the job market to start working in the public or private sector, as for example data analyst or data steward. Also, you can - dependent on your chosen specialization - choose to continue a master programme in the field of data science or societal studies. Due to the interdisciplinary character of the programme, you will learn to communicate and work together with people from different backgrounds, which is a skill that is highly relevant for the current labour market
You will be prepared to work with data and society related challenges in a very broad perspective. As the programme works with many real-life cases, you will be in contact with potential employers. Since digitalisation is (and will stay) a fast-emerging topic, the challenges that will have to be solved by graduates from the DSS programme are still there for years to come.
