The School of Dentistry's Master Program is designed to offer exceptional students an unparalleled opportunity to gain expertise in cutting-edge research and advanced dental-related clinical care. Our program emphasizes a range of research areas, including oral cancers, CAD/CAM digital manufacturing, artificial intelligence, regenerative medicine, and dental-related clinical trials. The Master’s program is fully integrated with the dental department of TMU’s three affiliated hospitals, which have established ten specialist training institutions that offer a unique combination of PGY training and Master of Science degree. To ensure a high-quality teaching and research environment, we offer a dual-supervisor system that provides students with personalized guidance and mentorship from experienced researchers. Moreover, we offer a joint dual-degree program that allows students to study abroad at two prestigious sister schools in Japan.

Overview

The Master’s program is a 2-year full-time program that integrated with the dental department of TMU’s three affiliated hospitals. We established ten specialist training institutions to provide a combination of PGY (Post-Graduate Year) training and a Master of Science degree. Students will receive training from the dual-supervisor system to tackle research questions in dental-related fields. We welcome motivated students who are interested in gaining expertise in dental research to join our close-knit community.

Course details

Our rigorous two-year program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in dentistry, with coursework spanning from basic to applied and clinical dentistry. The program includes a wide range of courses such as special topic seminars, applied biostatistics, thesis writing, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, pedodontics, oral and maxillary surgery, implantology, operative dentistry, temporomandibular disorders, biomaterials, regenerative and translational dentistry. In addition to coursework, our program also includes opportunities for students to participate in journal clubs and research laboratory trainings, allowing them to gain hands-on experience and develop their research skills.

To graduate, students must earn a minimum number of credits in graduate-level courses approved for the program, as well as a minimum number of credits in basic medicine. Each student must also orally defend a master's thesis based on their research. In addition to our Master's program, we offer PhD degree courses for students who are interested in pursuing advanced research and building a career in academia or industry.

 

Entry requirements

We warmly welcome prospective students who are interested in joining our program and seeking a strong foundation in the basic dental science that underlies clinical presentation. Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and hold a Bachelor's degree in dentistry, dental sciences, oral hygiene care, medicine, pharmaceutical science, biological sciences, material sciences, bioengineering, or related fields.

To apply, applicants must submit a research plan, two recommendation letters, a letter of interest explaining why they wish to pursue the School of Dentistry's Master Program at TMU, and a curriculum vitae that describes their education, qualifications, publications, community involvement, and previous professional and research experience.

The combination of research skills and clinical knowledge will ensure that you are well-equipped with expertise required to thrive in opportunities for employment in the global dental-related market. Our recent graduates have either continued to a PhD program or established their careers in organizations around the world, including research institutions, clinical establishments, biotechnological companies, government agencies for research or health and welfare. Many of our graduates have chosen to develop their career in education or academic institutions as teaching or research faculty.
