International Ph.D. Program for Cell Therapy and Regeneration Medicine

To meet the increasing demand for personalized patient care using cell/stem cell-based therapy, TMU established the Research Center of Cell Therapy and Regeneration Medicine (TMU-CCTRM) and a Good Tissue Practice (GTP) Laboratory. Faculty members and researchers from five departments across the College of Medicine and College of Medical Science and Technology contribute their diverse expertise to the program, providing graduate students with unique learning opportunities to develop their experimental and practical skills. Additionally, researchers and clinicians collaborate to translate their basic research findings into clinical trials (bench to bedside) and create cell products that meet clinical needs. With support from our faculty and extensive laboratory training, our students are expected to fulfill their full potential and pursue successful careers.

Overview

The International Ph.D. Program for Cell Therapy and Regeneration Medicine (IPCTRM) is the first of its kind in Taiwan. Its main objective is to provide doctoral students with education and training in integrating research in basic and clinical sciences. The program aims to equip students with the skills necessary to excel in both academic and industry settings and to become leading experts in the field of cell therapy and regenerative medicine.

Course details

Providing students with the expertise, professionalism, and technical skills needed for cell therapy research and practical applications, the IPCTRM curriculum includes:

Required Courses (1st Year):

  • Basic Research: covering the methods, current status, future developments in immune cell therapy, and that of a new generation of genetic engineering.
  • Translational Application: focusing on the latest translational medical research, clinical practice, industry product development, and global regulations for cell therapy and regeneration medicine.
  • Industrial Connection: providing experts’ insights to research highlights or future products with opportunities to visit biotech companies in Taiwan.

Elective Courses (2nd Year): covering specific areas under Stem Cell Medicine, such as the latest advances in stem cells, cancer stem cells, and cell therapy, with emphasis on the connection and application between basic research and translational medicine.

Thesis Research (2nd Year and Beyond)

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the International Ph.D. Program for Cell Therapy and Regeneration Medicine (IPCTRM), applicants must hold a Master's degree in a field related to biological or biomedical science and have a strong interest in pursuing graduate-level studies in cell therapy and regeneration medicine. International students are also required to provide a certificate of English proficiency from an approved testing agency.

Career outcomes

At the International Ph.D. Program for Cell Therapy and Regeneration Medicine (IPCTRM), we are committed to nurturing leaders across a broad range of academic and industrial careers. As the demand for various cell products and regenerative medicine continues to increase, the practical skills that students acquire during their graduate studies can be directly applied to the industrial settings. Furthermore, our industrial partnerships, including those with TMU spin-offs, provide excellent opportunities for students to pursue careers as cell manufacturing specialists or R&D researchers in start-ups or large pharmaceutical companies.

In addition to industrial positions, our graduates can pursue a range of other careers, including faculty positions at universities, clinical research coordinators or associates, clinical trial reviewers, and regulatory experts in clinical areas. The diverse career options available to our graduates make our program both attractive and competitive.
