The University offers research postgraduate programmes in Arts, Business, Social Sciences and Environmental Science, with some of which in collaboration with renowned Mainland/Overseas institutions. 

Research postgraduate studies at Lingnan emphasis student-centered learning which ensures close and supportive thesis supervision, while at the same time encourages candidates to exercise intellectual creativity in their research endeavours.

Course details

The University offers Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in Chinese, Cultural Studies, English, History, Philosophy, Translation, Visual Studies, Business, Economics, Government and International Affairs, Psychology, Sociology and/or Social Policy, Urban Studies and an MPhil programme in Environmental Science.  Both the MPhil and PhD programmes lead to in-depth study in specific research areas.  The University has also been offering a number of PhD programmes in collaboration with renowned Mainland/Overseas universities. Duration

  • MPhil: 24 months (full-time); 36 months (part-time)
    PhD: 36 months (full-time); 60 months (part-time) with relevant master's degree
    PhD: 48 months (full-time); 72 months (part-time) without relevant master's degree

(Note: The duration for collaborative programmes vary according to the agreement with the institutions concerned.)

Entry requirements

The admission of a student to the University is based on academic suitability and potential for a programme. An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of MPhil should normally hold a relevant bachelor’s degree with first or second class honours or at an equivalent standard awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by the University; or have obtained an equivalent qualification; or have provided satisfactory evidence of academic and professional attainment.

An applicant for admission to candidature for the degree of PhD should normally hold a master’s degree awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by the University; or hold a relevant bachelor’s degree with first or second class honours or at an equivalent standard, and have registered in a programme of study for a master’s degree at a recognised tertiary education institution for at least one year and have evidence of research achievement; or have obtained an equivalent qualification; or have provided satisfactory evidence of academic and professional attainment.

Graduates will possess the advanced critical and analytical skills in their research areas/disciplines which would allow them to pursue a career in teaching or research such as becoming scholars or researchers in the related fields. They are highly qualified professionals/specialists who are capable to work for different sectors and organisations, e.g. government, arts and culture, education, finance, etc., and private vs non-profit organisations and think tanks, and are able to bring impacts with outcomes of their researches for contributing to the betterment of the society and human mankind. Our MPhil graduates may opt to pursue further studies on PhD programmes in Hong Kong and abroad, while our PhD graduates may pursue a career in academia in local and international renowned universities.
